Several negatives were found at auction in March 2020; Lt John Dennis Greene took the photos. He served in the Royal Navy 1939-1945 and was awarded the DSC in January 1940.

The 55 images have been scanned, and unfortunately, only a small number are suitable for printing. For copyright purposes, these images are referred to as the ‘Lt John Dennis Greene Collection’.

Amongst this collection are rare photos of HMS Courageous, an aircraft carrier that was the first Royal Navy victim of the 2nd World War, with a loss of 519 lives. Lt Greene also photographed several Fairey Swordfish, affectionately known as the “Stringbag,” which was a biplane torpedo bomber primarily used by the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy.

It played a significant role in the attack on Taranto and the sinking of the Bismarck, and it had a top speed of 138 mph, which was a considerable advantage.
